Ready or not, Windows 10 is coming…

...to a PC near you. Microsoft recently upgraded the priority of their free Windows 10 upgrade from “optional” to “recommended”. What that means is that millions of PC users relying on Microsoft’s built-in Windows Update function to download and install “recommended” upgrades automatically will soon be receiving Windows 10, whether they planned for it, or wanted it, or not.

As we’ve said before, we continue to recommend that Windows 7 users NOT jump on the upgrade to Windows 10. It’s something that should be done after careful review of hardware and software compatibilities in your own unique situation. Our experience with Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrades has been mixed – and many Windows 7 users will be better off waiting to get Windows 10 on their next computer.

If you want to prevent the Windows 10 upgrade from happening on your PC’s, check out the article “Here’s how to block the Windows 10 upgrade”. With that, I’d offer a comment and a warning.

The comment is that clients on our PC Vigilance managed service platform don’t receive their updates automatically from Microsoft. They come from a scheduled update that consists of white-listed (tested) patches that doesn’t include the forced Windows 10 updates. So they aren’t affected by this.

The warning is that the article describes how to make changes to your computer’s registry. This can be DANGEROUS. It can render your computer unusable if done incorrectly. Use this information at your own risk, or contact us for help.
