Who’s got your back(up)?

We’ve started out 2017 meeting quite a few prospective new clients. No complaints at all about that. We’re always looking to help more businesses with their IT, digital marketing and related challenges.

The complaint, or at least, the concern, is when we start to look at the current state of a business’ IT (which is probably why we got the “help” call to begin with). What’s been especially striking, is the number of successful businesses who thought their backups were running successfully and being monitored for success – and when we ask “Who’s got your backup?” and start to really look, the answers have been scary.

In one instance, a business had good backup software and a single hard drive receiving what were assumed to be daily backups. In our view, that’s bad enough in that there’s only one device receiving a backup, and it never leaves the building. Not especially safe, even when running perfectly. But this backup wasn’t running at all, hadn’t been for some time, and no one was checking.

In another instance, a firm wasn’t making backups at all, depending on the resilience of their highly redundant storage array to protect them from data loss. Then, they had a one-in-a-million storage array failure and needed to resort to time-consuming and expensive data recovery services to try and get their data back.

In another, a national backup service remotely installed and configured a client’s backup – and never circled back around to check its success, or make sure that the client knew how to check. Again, we found that it wasn’t running at all.

Space here precludes sharing at least two other instances similar to the above -- and this is all less than two weeks into January!

So, while it may be a little late for New Year’s resolutions, it’s never too late to resolve to KNOW who has your back(up), and that it’s reliable, current, complete, and that at least one copy exists remote from your place of business. Of course, we can help with that, as we’re doing for dozens of businesses today. Contact us today for an evaluation.
