It’s that time of year again…

…when the weather demonstrates its power, all too often with awful and tragic results.

But it doesn’t take an F5 tornado for the weather to create problems… even the seasonal thunderstorm can create havoc for electronics – and that reminds us of the power and room environment issues we see every spring and through the summer.

Electronic gear depends on clean, reliable power and a temperature and humidity controlled environment. Nothing good happens when a computer loses power unexpectedly, or “bakes” in a room that’s too warm.

To protect critical network servers, that might mean a specially air-conditioned room with dedicated power – or it may just mean that your server isn’t sitting in an unventilated closet, plugged directly in to the wall.

The requirements for PC’s aren’t as great, but they should be in places where the power supply and ventilating fans inside can do their job, plugged into a good surge suppressor, or ideally, an uninterruptible power supply (UPS).

Ensuring that your IT gear has quality power is one of the easiest and most cost effective things you can to ensure the health of your equipment and its data.

And when something more damaging than a thunderstorm rolls through, it’s critical to have a backup strategy that can survive a site disaster.

That’s a topic for another column, but we’re always available to help, not only with power and environment planning, but backup, disaster recovery and business continuity programs.
