If you don’t like the weather…

... start writing a column about how nice it is – and then watch it change before the column is done. That’s what happened when I started writing this last week in “almost shirtsleeves” weather -- and now I’m completing it, looking out the window at blowing snow and subzero wind chills. It’s amazing how fast the weather can change.

Change is also coming fast to Windows PC users. Last week, Microsoft announced end of support for their Windows 8.0 operating system (just three years old), as well as end of support for Internet Explorer (IE) versions 8, 9, and 10. This means no more security updates for any of those products.

The immediate upgrade path for Windows 8.0 PC’s is Windows 8.1, which will continue to receive security updates -- or better yet, Windows 10. That said, we continue to recommend that Windows 7 users NOT jump on the seemingly ubiquitous offers to upgrade to Windows 10. Our experience with Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrades has been mixed – and most Windows 7 users will be better off waiting to get Windows 10 on their next computer.

If you’re using IE 8, 9, or 10, you should consider upgrade to IE 11 or Microsoft Edge – or consider Firefox as an excellent alternative. If you need help making sense of all this and your upgrade options and opportunities, let us know.
